Salboy, in partnership with Domis Construction, has reached a major construction milestone at Obsidian, the new 26-storey residential tower rising at Greengate on the edge of Manchester city centre.
The topping out marks the completion of the building’s structural frame, bringing the landmark development a step closer to delivering 250 new homes and curated lifestyle amenities in one of Salford and Manchester’s fastest-growing neighbourhoods.
Designed by Studio Power and delivered by Domis Construction alongside Salboy, Obsidian has been created to offer a high-quality residential experience, with a range of resident amenities including a gym, private dining space, cinema room, co-working areas and a residents’ lounge designed to support modern city living.

Located on Trinity Way within Salford’s Chapel Wharf regeneration zone, the tower forms part of the continued transformation of Greengate into a vibrant residential neighbourhood linking Salford and Manchester city centre. Obsidian follows the successful delivery of developments including Local Blackfriars and Fifty5ive, both delivered through the long-standing partnership between Salboy and Domis.
To celebrate the milestone, Salboy and Domis welcomed project partners and stakeholders to the site, including representatives from Salford City Council.
Councillor Phil Cusack, Chair of Planning and Transportation at Salford City Council, said:
“Obsidian represents a significant investment in Salford; a 26-storey, £80 million scheme that will provide 250 new homes right here in the heart of our growing community. Standing beside the completed Local Blackfriars development, it’s another clear example of how partnership, ambition and high-quality design are reshaping this part of the city.
On behalf of the City Council, I want to acknowledge the hard work of everyone involved – Domis Construction, the project team, the architects and the many skilled workers who have brought us to this point. Developments like this play a vital role in supporting Salford’s continued growth, creating new homes and a vibrant urban environment that attracts people to live, work and invest here.”

Kingsley Thornton, Managing Director at Domis Construction, said:
“Topping out Obsidian is a major moment for everyone involved. It is a visible marker of thousands of hours of planning, problem solving and hard work on site. For us, it is Design. Disrupt. Deliver. in action.
I am proud of our teams and partners for driving the tower to its highest point and setting a new build standard we can carry forward into future projects. We will continue with the same momentum through the final stages of construction as we move towards completion in 2026.”

Simon Ismail, CEO of Salboy, added:
“Reaching the topping out of Obsidian is an important milestone and one we are particularly proud of, marking our third residential development in the Greengate area within Salford’s Chapel Wharf regeneration zone. It has been rewarding to play a role in the continued transformation of this part of the city.
Working alongside Domis, it is great to see what this partnership continues to deliver as the building now takes its place on the skyline. We look forward to progressing the final stages of construction ahead of completion.”

Construction will now move into the next phase as the development continues towards completion later this year.
