How Manchester’s skyscrapers stack up against the world’s top skylines

High-rise apartments and mixed-use buildings are becoming landmarks in world-class cities around the world. As city centre living has become more popular than ever, many are looking to tall apartment buildings to find homes that come with luxury amenities and convenience.

Many of these developments even have the feel of a five-star hotel, but sometimes that comes with a high price tag. However, there are areas with more affordable options. Here we’ll compare tall apartment building skyscrapers across the world and the costs, benefits and quality of life in each.

Manchester

Manchester is home to more skyscraper developments than any city in North America besides Toronto. The skyline has become dominated by new skyscrapers and high rises full of Manchester apartments in order to keep up with the ever-growing demand. It’s even held the top spot for the most livable city in Britain by The Economist “Global Liveability Index” every year since the index launched in 2011.

Manchester is the most affordable place to live on this list. Some apartments in the top residential buildings in the city are even available to purchase through Help to Buy. Many of the tallest apartment buildings in the city are located in the neighbourhood Deansgate, and one of the newest will be the Viadux development at 40 storeys.

The Viadux scheme offers a communal garden, providing residents with outdoor space to relax and take in impressive city views. A fully equipped modern gym and state of the art cinema are also a part of the scheme. Additionally, office space and restaurant and bar options will be provided on the wider development site, providing everything needed for modern city living.  With an average price per sq.ft of £508 across the scheme.

Seoul

Seoul is home to the most expensive homes in South Korea, in addition to the tallest building in the country – Lotte World Tower Signiel Residences. Amenities range from a fitness club, golf range and yoga studio to a café, pet wash room, business room and classroom. There are also many services based in the building, including a florist and babysitter. With 123 floors, the tower is a symbol of elegance, and while it’s the second most affordable on the list, it still costs about £1,350 per sq ft to live there.

London

London’s skyline has some of the tallest residential buildings in the UK. The Shard is the tallest partly residential building, while St. George Wharf Tower is the tallest fully residential building with 50 storeys. The development offers residents access to a gym, spa, swimming pool, 360-degree terraces and a business lounge. However, living in London is much more expensive, and apartments at St. George Wharf Tower have sold for a whopping £2,100 per sq ft, which is nearly three times the UK average for apartments. And the capital often sits below Manchester on livability lists.

Singapore

When many people think of Singapore they think of luxury living, and that’s no different with Wallich Residence, a part of Guoco Tower in the heart of Singapore’s Central Business District. There’s a long list of amenities, including an infinity pool, library gym, gourmet dining room, networking suite, sky gardens, barbeque pits and also a theatrette for guests to host private screenings. With 181 units, the development is exclusive and costs about £2,800 per square foot.

Hong Kong

The Cullinan is the tallest apartment building in the city and has a gym, clubhouse, pool, tennis and garden and is even pet friendly. However, it costs around £3,500 per sq ft to buy an apartment there.

New York City

New York City is home to the tallest residential tower in the world, Central Park Tower, sitting at 472m and has 179 luxury condos. It sits on a bustling part of 57th Street, which has been coined Billionaires’ Row. The building is also home to spectacular views of the city’s skyline and of Central Park, a seven-story Nordstrom and exclusive 50,000 sq ft of amenities for residents. A two-bedroom condo was on the market for an eye-watering $6.9m, costing approximately £5,000 per sq ft.
